Discovering the Charm of Silverton: A Must-Visit Town Near Broken Hill.

Silverton is a short drive from Broken Hill through a very flat landscape to reduce the flooding damage on the roads; there are 39 dips between Broken Hill and Silverton. Now a ghost town you can see some of the old is colonial buildings in the region which date back to the late 1800s. The Sleepy town is now home to a pub in hotel, a bakery, a tourist information as well as several galleries and a historic Silverton jail, as well as the mad Max museum mad, Max to Museum.

Three thousand people used to live in Silverton. The gaol consists of 15 rooms that are home to exhibits of early life and history in the area including household appliances, war, memorabilia, Aboriginal artefacts, restored hospital rooms with various tools and medical instruments as well as seven cells.

If you’re into Mad Max, it’s definitely worth visiting the Mad Max Museum which is also in Silverton. There is a huge collection of genuine movie props the pays tribute to the film. Based on how we were feeling the morning we visited Silverton we skipped this museum.

What we loved most about Silverton were the donkeys. As Silverton is now at tourist town, donkeys have also made it their home – a must do photo opportunity.

Mundi Mundi Plains Lookout

While in Silverton, it is worth driving the south another 5 minutes south to the Mundi Mundi Plains Lookout. Here you will get a real sense of the vastness of the outback as you head up to the lookout for a view over the seemingly endless Mundi Mundi Plains. But once you’re there, looking out to a horizon so distant that you can see the curvature of the planet, you could be at the ends of the earth.
